Skyline thunderbirds

Innlegg om skyline's sports sesong

Volleyball:
Summer Younie and her Skyline varsity volleyball team has been “oh, so close” to making the state championships the past two seasons. In 2006 they fell to St. John in a 2A sub-state finals.Last season, they were up on Quivira Heights in the third and final game of the Skyline sub-state before falling. Quivira moved on and claimed the state title. The Lady Thunderbirds ended their season 37-4.Hannah McPherson and Lambert, among the state’s leaders in assists and kills, respectively, graduated. Howell, who provided guile along the front line, accompanied them. Mathilde Skjelbred, an international student, joins the trio’s exodus.Younie won’t be staring at novices on the court in 2008.She brings back Natali Jones and Jordan Gilleece, the team’s most explosive hitters; Leah McPherson, apprentice to her sister, Hannah; Andrea Hirt, a defensive specialist; steady Audra Howell; and libero Amy Jo Maphet. The maturation of Howell as a presence at the net is a key ingredient to Skyline continuing their domination and earning them a trip to states.

Track:
Track and FieldNatali Jones finished third and Hannah McPherson brought home two six-place-finishes from the 2008 KSHSAA 1A state track and field championships.Jones has the opportunity to move up to gold in 2009. Summer Younie’s 4x100M relay will be missing Hannah McPherson, but freshmen Leah McPherson and Rosena Startzman, and Jones, a sophomore, were the other 3/4th of the team.Sophomore shot putter Paige Wahrman missed medaling by one place at 2008 states, taking seventh. Growing confidence and fine-tuning her technique are steps to attaining a top 6 finish.Andrea Hirt and Jordan Gilleece qualified for 2007 states, but just missed in 2008. There should be a spot for them in Wichita in 2009 along with Audra Howell, Ashton Lee, and Tia Gilleece. The boys lose Mark Jones and Darryl Willard. Jones competed in the 110M and 300M hurdles at states and Willard the 1600M and 3200M. Seniors. Say good-bye.Trent Befort grew into the field events after spending the 2007 season with the Thunderbirds’ golf team. He established a personal best in the discus at the 2008 Woodman. He also displayed prowess in the javelin and shot put.Josh Nelson showed promise in the long jump and high jump at the South Gray regional.
